Departmental Job Descriptions

 
Marketing

The Marketing Department at Tennessee Repertory Theatre encompasses all activities involving marketing and sales, publicity, ticketing, public relations, branding, education/outreach, and promotional events. Interns in this department will learn non-profit marketing in a highly competitive arts community. Jobs will be assigned according to skill, area of interest, and schedule of availability. Interns in this department will be given one independent project to complete as a part of their educational experience.  The project will be designed according to departmental need, intern skill and areas of interest. Jobs in this department will be supervised by the Marketing Director.

In addition to the project, possible duties and job requirements are as follows:

  • Observe rehearsals and meetings with the artistic staff to develop ideas for effectively marketing productions on a modest budget
  • Collect and archive materials
  • Assist in preparing the playbill and other promotional materials for each production
  • Help set-up and work outreach events
  • Help work marketing table at productions and other promotional events as needed
  • Assist with the maintenance of promotional and marketing databases
  • Other clerical and general duties as needed
General Production

Internships in this department are for those interested in stage management or artistic areas (such as directing, acting, or dramaturgy) of production. Interns will have the opportunity to experience rehearsals, and will contribute to the process as a member of the production crew. Interns will work with an Equity stage manager to become familiar with the production process and Equity regulations. They will observe professional directors and actors at work, and in some cases attend production meetings. All jobs in this department are supervised by the production Stage Manager, Artistic Associate or Company Coordinator.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the stage manager in preparation for rehearsals
  • Working closely with the Production Assistant during rehearsals and performance
  • Attending and assisting with rehearsals
  • Organization and maintenance of rehearsal and performance props/costumes
  • Working production tech week
  • Working backstage during the run of a show at TPAC's Johnson Theater
Costume Production

Interns in this department will experience the daily operations of a professional costume shop, under the supervision of the Resident Costume Designer. Costume shop jobs vary according to skill level, schedule and seasonal needs, but all require a minimum of six work hours per week.

Duties in this area may include but are not limited to:

  • Hand sewing
  • Machine stitching
  • General shop maintenance>
  • Laundry maintenance
  • Assistance in research and paperwork
  • Shopping and pulling from stock
  • Assisting in actor fittings
  • Patterning
  • Wardrobe assistance
Technical Production

Interns in this department will experience the various workings of a professional scene shop and prop shop. Jobs will vary based on skill level and availability, and will be supervised by the Technical Director. General shop positions require a minimum of six work hours per week.

Duties in this area may include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the construction of sets and prop
  • Learn a familiarity with shop tools, materials, and construction techniques
  • General shop maintenance

Some positions will be available for load-in and load-out of sets. Sets pieces are loaded into TPAC's Johnson Theater, then assembled in 2–4 working days. This is a great hands-on experience which requires working in a fast-paced setting to assemble a full set for a professional theatrical production.

Duties and requirements:

  • Should be able to work in a cooperative team environment
  • Must be available to work scheduled dates which fall just prior to tech week and after closing night
  • Some general scene shop experience is preferred but not required
  • Should have ability to do some lifting and moving
